Unlock your first home with a Lifetime ISA

Are you exploring options to help you step onto that first rung on the property ladder? You may want to consider a Lifetime ISA

If you’re looking for a way to save up a substantial amount for a deposit, the Lifetime ISA might be your ticket to success. Let’s take a closer look at the details and discover how this could help make your homeownership dreams a reality.

Demystifying the Lifetime ISA

The Lifetime ISA is a tax-free savings account that allows you to deposit up to £4,000 annually into your ISA account, with an enticing perk— the government provides a 25% bonus, capped at £1,000.

Who qualifies?

If you're over 18 years old but under 40, you’re eligible to open a Lifetime ISA account. Moreover, you can continue making contributions into the account until you reach 50. After this point, your account will remain active, but you can no longer add funds to it.

What are the perks?

Beyond the 25% bonus, the Lifetime ISA offers several advantages:

  • Joint savings: If you and a partner both possess separate Lifetime ISAs, you can collectively enjoy a substantial bonus. This windfall can significantly bolster your house deposit in just a few years

  • Interest earnings: As an Individual Savings Account (ISA), your savings automatically accrue interest.

Additional insights:

  • To secure the 25% bonus, you must have the Lifetime ISA account open for at least 12 months

  • For first time buyers, the UK residential property must not exceed £450,000

  • Withdrawals can only be made under the following circumstances: after turning 60, for your first home purchase, or if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness with a life expectancy of less than 12 months

  • For any other withdrawals, a 25% penalty applies, resulting in the loss of the government bonus.

It's important to recognise that the Lifetime ISA is designed for long-term saving, and you need to have the account open for a minimum of 12 months. If your objective is to own a home - and subsequently, withdraw funding - in the next year, you may want to consider alternative routes. However, waiting more than one year might coincide with more favourable housing market conditions, so do bear this in mind.

Already have a Help to Buy ISA?

While the Help to Buy ISA programme is now closed, existing account holders can continue contributing until November 2029, when all accounts will cease. Make sure to claim your bonus by November 2030. If you currently maintain a Help to Buy ISA, you also have the option to transfer your funds into a Lifetime ISA.
